Pulse Techniques9 Products

Dr. Steve Jackson's Time Machine:

In the mid-1950s, electrical engineer Eugene Shenk designed a tube, transformer and inductor based audio equalizer, the Pulse Techniques “PULTEC” EQP-1A, that is still revered for its ultra-musical sound quality and always-reliable performance. The Pultec Passive Program EQ in its various forms has been in continuous use in professional studios for all this time. The thick yet tight low and and airy high-sparkle are hallmarks of the “Pultec Sound.” A good EQP-1A can be used from kick drum to lead vocals, and many tracks in-between. For whatever reason, no other EQ sounds exactly like the Pultec. Every engineer who has used a Pultec EQ knows, you can use a LOT of boost, you can dime the thing, and it never sounds artificially EQ’d or harsh. This cannot even be said of famous EQs by Neve or API.

Nearly 60 years later, it is almost impossible to find one of Mr. Shenk’s original unmodified units in excellent condition. Most are owned by producers and studios who hold on to them like gold. In the rare case you do find one for sale, you’re going to pay premium market price.

Until now…

In early 2000, when first considering a recreation of the Pultec design, Ph.D. Electrical Engineer and Materials Scientist Steve Jackson committed to faithfully recreate Shenk’s original Pultec with no compromise, modification or “enhancement” of the original design. When it was impossible to source an original component, Jackson painstakingly and meticulously conducted electrical, mechanical and chemical characterizations to precisely determine the original component’s specs in order to build custom replacements. It also helped in large part to have numerous conversations with original designer Eugene Shenk over the ten year span. Shenk was more than happy to guide and encourage Jackson in his mission. In 2010, Jackson finally achieved the goal of faithfully recreating one of the “Holy Grails” of professional recording equipment, the Pulse Techniques (Pultec) EQP-1A3 Program Equalizer.

Jackson’s determination and hard work have been rewarded through the  acknowledgement by many of the major players in the recording industry that his products are indeed real, and only, modern Pultecs. Jackson has continued to expand the product-line to include the popular MEQ-5 midrange EQ, the API 2520 line amp versions of the EQP-1A3 and MEQ-5, a full line of mastering products, and a brand new Pultec EQ to fit the 500 series “lunchbox” format.

Modeled directly after the rack-mount EQP-1A3-SS solid-state program equalizer, the Pultec EQP-500A is the exact same unit ported for the 500 Series form factor. In the early 1970s, after condensing the classic 3U model EQP-1A into the 2U form-factor model EQP-1A3 (with the exact same components and specs), Pulse Techniques introduced a...
