Chandler Limited REDD Microphone

Chandler Ltd. REDD Microphone

The TEC Award-nominated Chandler Limited REDD Microphone is a large-diaphragm tube condenser microphone, combining mic and preamp into a single, beautifully handcrafted device with classic looks and vibe.

While the Chandler Ltd. REDD Microphone may be housed in the familiar U47-style body of a vintage microphone, it is not a recreation or reissue of the famed Neumann or Telefunken-badged tube mics. Though it does take its design cues from vintage circuitry, the Chandler REDD Microphone is a unique take on the tube mics of yore by including the historic circuitry of the classic REDD.47 preamp built right into the microphone's housing. Chandler founder Wade Goeke, being a student of Rupert Neve's design philosophy, understands that the shortest high-quality signal path makes the best recordings. To achieve that goal, The REDD Microphone features the vacuum-tube-based REDD.47 Mic Amplifier circuit directly coupled to a custom handmade premium platinum membrane capsule, so it can be used with or without an external preamplifier.

Chandler REDD Microphone unique features:

  • Built-in tube REDD.47 mic preamplifier
  • Custom handmade, hand-milled capsule, platinum membrane
  • Gain switchable from +4 to +33dB gain in normal mode
  • Additional gain drive mode

Chandler Ltd. REDD Microphone - Behind the Grille

Built-in tube REDD.47 mic preamplifier

Chandler Limited and Abbey Road Studios introduce the first new EMI-badged microphone in over a half century, the REDD Microphone. Designed by Chandler Limited founder and chief designer, Wade Goeke, the patent-pending REDD Microphone represents a paradigm shift in traditional microphone design. The REDD mic combines historic EMI circuitry dating back to the days of Alan Blumlein (the father of stereo) with the sound of the EMI REDD.47 tube preamp in a new and unique way.

Originally designed for the REDD.51 console at Abbey Road, the REDD.47 mic amplifier provides nine gain selections, from +4 to +33db in the Norm position, and for more tonal and coloration possibilities, extended gain and punch in Drive mode.

Shortest signal path

Chandler Limited's REDD Microphone couples a custom, premium platinum membrane capsule to the historic EMI REDD.47 tube amplifier circuit, adapted for use inside the microphone body. The configuration dramatically reduces the distance between the capsule and preamplifier, allowing for driving the line as close to the source as possible, resulting in a purer form of audio transmission (just like Mr. Neve recommends.) The proximity of the REDD Microphone's custom capsule to the internal tube mic preamp, allows it to deliver a larger than life full-bodied sound, with a velvety smooth top-end.

Features available from the microphone body, include switchable cardioid/omni patterns, 10dB pad, and phase-reverse. Continuous output and low-contour control are accessible from the high-quality external power supply. A shockmount, 25' Mogami microphone cable, PSU, and custom molded flight case, featuring high-density rigid foam, are included.

Chandler Limited EMI Abbey Road Studios REDD Microphone

Rigorously tested at Abbey Road Studios by Abbey Road's former Chief Engineer, Peter Cobbin on a variety of sources, the REDD Microphone was put up against some of the most famous and classic microphones in recording history and excelled.

According to Cobbin, "During the development, I have had the opportunity to road test this mic on the best of acoustic applications. Abbey Road has one hell of a mic collection and by making comparisons to other legendary and vintage microphones has given us a serious benchmark to work to. Typically for recording an artist like Sting I would use 3 classic microphones and choose the best. For recording rare Stradivarius cellos worth millions I would reach for something really special. On almost every application from acoustic guitars, hand percussion, vocal artists to full symphonic orchestras, in my comparative testing, The REDD mic shines above them all. "

Applications

The Chandler Limited REDD Microphone was designed to handle a variety of source material, including vocals, strings, piano, drums, bass guitar, electric and acoustic guitars.

What the pros are saying about the Chandler Ltd. REDD Microphone

“I put it up against a U47 and C12. The REDD was a rather embarrassing clear winner! It made the U47 sound a little dull and the C12 a quite plain and thin. The REDD achieved both body and clarity.”

-Peter Cobbin (Abbey Road's former Chief Engineer; Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Sting, Ed Sheeran, Kanye West, U2, LeAnn Rimes, Danny Elfman)

"Absolutely loved it, warm and smooth. I had just sold an original absolutely mint 1951 U47 for a friend which sounded amazing (for just under $20,000). Listening to the Chandler I heard all the same qualities and the same vibe in the REDD. But we were also able to drive the built-in pre-amp a bit harder to get that elevated harmonic content that I love in all the Chandler gear..."

- Michael Wagener (Mötley Crüe, King's X, Alice Cooper, Megadeth, Janet Jackson, Ozzy Osbourne, Dokken, Metallica, Skid Row)

EMI/REDD History

There's a reason why Abbey Road Studios, whose doors opened in 1931 remains open and operating today. In a word; standards. More precisely, the highest of standards, which Abbey Road sets and maintains through its practices and equipment. In fact, before any piece of equipment was implemented at Abbey Road, it received a thorough going-over by EMI engineers (Electronics and Music Incorporated) to ensure that it maintained the standards established by their REDD (Record Engineering Development Department) technical division.

So, when Chandler Ltd's Wade Geoke set out to make the highest quality equipment for the recording industry, enlisting the aid and schematics of EMI was a no-brainer.

Already considered a modern classic, the Chandler Limited REDD Microphone has been adopted by top producers, engineers and music makers around the globe. For more information, call or chat online with your PAD Professional today.
