Universal Audio Arrow—Under the Hood
Unison Technology for brings you the analog classics in sound and feel
Even if you’ve only been on the fringes of the studio world, you’ve doubtless encountered the names, Neve, API, and UA 610. If not, you’re about to. These have been the go-to preamps of hit-makers for decades, and perhaps the most copied preamps on the planet. Neve is known for its smooth mids and lows, API for its clarity and punch, and the 610 lent its rich tube sound to the world’s top artists since the 50s. Of course, if you’re looking at an affordable desktop interface, such as the Apollo Arrow, the thought of spending in excess of $10k is not in the cards.
Now with Arrow’s Unison technology, you don’t just get a one-dimensional veneer, you get the tone, touch and “feel” of those preamps. The bundled preamps include the UA 610-B tube preamp, plus authentic mic preamp emulations of Neve and API, as well as guitar amp emulations from Fender and Marshall—complete with their signature impedance, gain stage sweet spots, and component-level circuit behavior.
The secret to Unison is its hardware-software integration between Arrow’s mic preamps and its onboard UAD-2 SOLO Core processor. Simply place a Unison preamp plug-in on your mic input in Arrow’s Console software and it physically re-configures Arrow’s impedance, which enables you to tap into the classic tube and transformer sounds of the world’s most recorded mic preamps and guitar amps.
A full suite of classic studio processing onboard
Along with preamp emulations, which are only half the recording battle, Arrow provides a suite of analog signal-processing plug-in emulations including the world’s only authentic Teletronix LA-2A, 1176LN, and Pultec EQs. In essence, the sound of thousands of dollars worth of analog hardware just waiting inside your Apollo Arrow to be unleashed on your mixes (and an unsuspecting populace). Developed by UA’s world-renowned team of algorithm engineers, these Realtime Analog Classics plug-ins are an essential part of the mixing toolkit of top Grammy-winning and multi-platinum-selling professionals.
From the tube warmth of the Pultec EQ on guitars, to the gentle limiting of the LA-2A on vocals, your recordings will take a giant leap forward in rich, sonically complex analog sound.
Vintage guitar and bass amps
For guitarists and bassists, Arrow includes Unison technology on its front panel instrument input, giving you spot-on emulations of amps, such as the Fender '55 Tweed Deluxe, Ampeg B-15N Bass Amplifier, Eden WT800 Bass Amplifier, and the included Marshall Plexi Classic—ready for you to track through at near-zero latency, or use in the mix for virtual reamping.
Use the UAD powered plug-ins library to expand your sonic potential
Beyond the included Realtime Analog Classics plug-ins*, Arrow lets you tap into the full library of award-winning UAD Powered Plug-Ins — including vintage EQs, Compressors, Reverbs, Tape Machines, Auto-Tune and more — in real time, and without taxing your computer’s CPU. With exclusive emulations from Neve, Ampex, Lexicon, Fender, Marshall, Antares, KORG, Moog, and more* the creative possibilities are nearly endless.
*Arrow includes the “Realtime Analog Classics” UAD plug-in bundle. Other UAD plug-ins sold separately.
Roadworthy metal construction
Not many desktop interfaces give you the ability to take a recording studio on the road, but if you are going mobile, the Apollo Arrow’s got your back(pack). With all-metal construction and bus-powered Thunderbolt 3 operation, Arrow is the only "clutter-free" portable audio interface that truly delivers album-quality results. It’s like having a virtual analog studio that fits onto any desktop, and easily travels in your laptop bag.

UA 610-B Tube Preamp and EQ
Universal Audio founder and legendary designer, Bill Putnam Sr.’s created the first channel strip for his 610 console. It comprised the 610 tube preamp, a simple EQ, a 3-way pan selector (LCR), and echo send. Putnam built custom consoles for the top studios, such as his own United Recording (now Ocean Way) and Cello studios, as well as Wally Heider Studios. The 610 console preamps, a favorite of engineers such as Bruce Swedien (Thriller) and Jack Josef Puig literally set the tone of recordings by Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Duke Ellington, and Sara Vaughn, as well as modern artists including Neil Young, Van Halen, Coldplay, and Arcade Fire.
With the Arrow’s Unison-enabled preamps, you can impart the rich euphonic sound with the iconic warmth and character of classic UA hardware. By emulating the entire signal path, including tube amplifiers, transformers, and circuit nonlinearities, the 610-B Tube Preamp and EQ plug-in injects organic detail and saturation to any signal—whether you’re re-amping or tracking through the 610-B via Universal Audio’s Unison technology.
Marshall Plexi Classic Amplifier
In the world of rock, there are two types of guitar amplifiers: the Marshall “plexi” guitar amplifier and everything else. As legendary as the music it helped create, the name “Marshall” is synonymous with Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Duane Allman, Eric Clapton, and every other skinny boy who picked up a solid body guitar aspiring to rock godhood. Unleashing sonic mayhem on an unsuspecting populace lulled into complacency with 60s pop, the Plexi’s snarl, sustain, smoothness, and crunch defined the sound of rock. Developed by Softube, the Marshall Plexi Classic Amp plug-in gives you the sound of this iconic amp with a perfectly placed microphone from engineer Tony Platt who recorded AC/DC’s Back in Black and Highway to Hell.
Teletronix LA-2A Classic Leveling Amplifier (Legacy)
With its gentle, program-dependent compression, optical detector, and meticulously designed tube amplifier, the LA-2A remains the go-to vocal compressor for professional mixers worldwide. Incredibly easy-to-use, it’s two-knobs Peak Reduction and Gain gives you the UA signature sound for guitar, bass, drums, and more.
1176SE/LN Classic Limiting Amplifiers (Legacy)
The world’s most recognizable compressor, introduced in 1966 and still used in both hardware and software form today, the 1176 has been a part of every recognizable sound in modern music. Don’t know how to get that big resonant snare sound that defined rock drums for decades? Try an 1176 in all-button mode (which UA powered plug-ins give you). The 1176 was the first to feature ultra-fast FET compression, which provide a level of control beyond that of compressors that used the compression characteristics of tubes (variable mu). The 1176 will impart punch, presence, and character as well as its signature distortion overtones on drums, vocals, guitars, and bass.
**High-level tip: As long as you have access to an LA-2A and an 1176LN, there isn’t a vocal track you can’t handle. And for extra smooth level control with plenty of tonal character and no artifacts, try running them serially. Set the LA-2A to tame peaks going into the 1176LN, which provides the fast level change. The secret is not to make either compressor work too hard.
Pultec Pro equalizers (legacy)
Hardware Pultec reissues can run you as much as $4k for a single channel, and a ridiculous amount for vintage models (that actually work). Arrow lets you mix with two of the most sought-after hardware EQs ever made; the Pultec MEQ-5 Midrange Equalizer and the EQP-1A Program Equalizer. Both of these tube-based icons deliver smooth and silky EQ curves with an abundance of warm analog character.
Precision Mix Rack Collection
The Precision Mix Rack Collection offers four modern, high-fidelity plug-ins for recording and mixing: the Precision Channel Strip, Precision Reflection Engine, and Precision Delay Modulation plug-ins. Powerful and intuitive, the Precision Mix Rack Collection gives you an impressive tool set for contemporary production.
Modeled from a vintage early-’80s Pro Co Rat, Raw Distortion delivers all the gritty growl and crunch of the legendary stompbox. With Unison technology, you can plug in to Apollo Arrow’s front-panel Hi-Z instrument jack and experience the same circuit interaction, gain range, and clip points for the true tone, feel, and response of the original hardware.
Softube Bass Amp Room
Based on a classic and versatile 1970’s bass amp. Softube’s Bass Amp Room plug-in boasts a vast range of sonic textures. From clean and fat to gritty and thick. Offering a monstrous 8x10 cabinet, blend-able DI, and adjustable mic placement, the Bass Amp Room plug-in gives you enough sonic versatility to cover any genre.
RealVerb Pro is a flexible, natural sounding reverb based on UA’s own unique algorithms. More than just putting a “tail” on a sound, RealVerb gives you the tools to design and “build” the room you hear in your mind’s ear. RealVerb Pro goes beyond simply big/small or dark/bright, giving your sources distortion-free, smoothing diffusion control, choice of virtual room materials, and ultra-long reverb tail.

Note: Arrow Thunderbolt 3 cannot be bus powered with Thunderbolt 1 & 2-equipped computers. A workaround for Thunderbolt 1 & 2 Mac or PCs is using a Thunderbolt 3 dock (with an external power supply) to power Arrow, and a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt adapter to connect the dock to a Thunderbolt 1 or 2 port on the computer. However, please be aware that this configuration is not fully tested or supported and we can't guarantee proper performance when using Arrow with unsupported systems.
