The Sontronics ST-Pad/Phase is an inline attenuator and 180° phase reverse device that’s a must-have tool for all high-SPL or multi-mic recording applications.
There are some gadgets that are quite useful in the studio for problem-solving. For example, if you’re tracking drums with older API preamps, or a True Systems Precision 8, which has no pads, and don’t want to overload your converters, you’ll need some sort of passive attenuator that isn’t going to change the sound. Or, let’s say you’ve done the phase test on the mics you’ll be using on a session, found one wired out of phase, and your console doesn’t have phase reverse. Rather than having to buy different units to solve each problem, all you need is one (or four) Sontronics ST-Pad/Phase inline attenuators with phase reverse, and all of your problems are solved.
Sontronics ST-Pad/Phase—Just the Facts:
- Easy-to-use inline pad and phase reversal switch
- XLR connections at both ends
- Two stages of -10dB attenuation
- 180° phase inversion
- Ideal for use when dealing with high SPL sources or for correcting phase issues in stereo miking applications
Sontronics ST-Pad/Phase—Behind the Curtain
Developed in response to engineers and studios asking how to easily handle signal overload, ST-Pad/Phase is an affordable and easy-to-use device that can deal with overload and phase at the click of a switch. For example, when an audio signal from a trumpet, sax, or guitar amp is too powerful, it can overload the sensitive circuitry of a microphone (especially ribbon mics), resulting in uncontrollable distortion that is impossible to remove in the mix.
Some microphones, mixing desks, and audio interfaces have in-built attenuation or pad switches, but many don't, and this is where the ST-Pad/Phase can save the day. The Sontronics ST-Pad/Phase provides attenuation via two switchable -10dB stages, allowing you to easily and quickly tame powerful audio signals.
The ST-Pad/Phase also features a -180° invert switch, which instantly inverses the phase by 180 degrees. This can be very helpful when you have microphones placed in close proximity to the sound source and phase-correlation is an issue.
A common example would be miking the top and bottom of a snare drum with two separate microphones. Simply plug in the ST-Pad/Phase to one of the mics and invert the phase.
The Sontronics ST-Pad/Phase is extremely easy to use. It can be plugged into the end of any microphone and then connected to a regular XLR cable. It's as simple as that.
What the pros are saying about the Sontronics ST-Pad/Phase
"It might be tiny but this little gadget has been an absolute life-saver. We now have one plugged into every ribbon mic we own, and the phase inverse feature is fantastic for stereo miking drums and guitars." — Mike Rose, writer-producer-engineer
