The Genelec 9301 AES/EBU Multichannel Interface is an 8-channel AES3 interface that allows 7.1 channels of digital audio sources to be connected to Genelec 7300-Series Smart subwoofers.
The Genelec 9301A AES/EBU Multichannel Interface offers a convenient means of expanding the stereo AES3 digital inputs and outputs of Genelec 7300-Series Smart subwoofers to eight channels of AES/EBU (now AES3) inputs and outputs in a 1U rackmount chassis. When placed in the signal path, the 9301A enables the use of 7.1 (with LFE) or 8 channels of digital audio over AES3. Thanks to a 7.1 digital audio input and XLR subwoofer output link, all digital audio sources, whether stereo or multichannel, can be seamlessly connected to Genelec 7300-Series Smart subwoofers to accommodate all possible digital audio applications a professional could imagine.
Genelec 9301A AES3—Just the Facts:
- Expands digital audio connectivity to 8 channels or to 7.1 channels when the low-frequency effects (LFE) channel is used
- Connects via a simple one-cable link, enables daisy-chaining
- GLM (Genelec Loudspeaker Management) software manages settings
- Power-saving Intelligent Signal Sensing (ISS)
- Four AES3 (AES/EBU) input-output pairs available
Genelec 9301A AES3—Under the Hood
Expand digital audio connectivity
With the 9301A connected to one or more 7300 series smart active monitoring (SAM) subwoofers such as the 7360A and 7370A, the low-frequency portion of multichannel AES/EBU signals can be monitored. The Genelec Smart Subwoofers have one AES/EBU input and output, enabling direct monitoring of two digital audio channels. The 9301A multichannel AES3 interface expands digital audio connectivity to eight channels or to 7.1 channels when the low-frequency effects (LFE) channel is used.
The 9301A unit connects to a subwoofer with a simple one-cable AES3 link. The cable carries the sum of all the main channel inputs and the LFE channel (if used) as the two AES3 sub-frames. If you wish to enhance or increase the subwoofer acoustic output capacity of your system, the AES3 output on the 7300-series subwoofer connector panel allows easy daisy-chaining via a single cable to multiple subwoofers.
GLM software management
The GLM (Genelec Loudspeaker Manager) software stores and recalls the 9301A’s settings to enable communication between the 9301A and a 7300 series subwoofer. Each 9301A is supplied with a mains cable, one 5 m GLM network cable and an operating manual.
ISS energy saving function
The energy saving Intelligent Signal Sensing (ISS) function can automatically put the 9301A into a power-save state when no AES/EBU input signal is present. In power-saving mode, the 9301A consumes less than one watt of power. Upon sensing an AES/EBU input signal, the 9301A automatically wakes and wanders bleary-eyed to the kitchen for a shot of caffeine and enters its normal operation mode (okay it does it rather instantly—powering on that is, not the coffee). The wait until entering the ISS power save can be configured using the GLM software. When ISS is active you can have your monitoring system ready for action at all times.
Four pairs of AES3 I/O
Four XLR male and female AES/EBU input/output pairs from AES IN 1 to AES IN 4 are available for digital audio signals. Outputs one to four are bit-to-bit copies of the input audio data and will typically be connected to the satellite monitors. This retains the original signal quality without any modification or compromise.
Controls and adjustments
On the front panel of the 9301A are a power switch with indicator and four lights, one for each AES/ EBU input. When the light is flashing continuously, the 9301A settings are being edited with the GLM software. When the input channel lights are lit, a valid AES/EBU input has been detected. If the light is off, there is a problem with the AES/EBU data or there is no valid AES/EBU input. In the GLM management software, the 9301A controls are embedded into the subwoofer controls.
