The Focal Solo6 Be is a 2-way, 150W LF/100HF studio monitor with a 6.5" bass driver and proprietary Beryllium featuring Focal’s proprietary inverted dome technology and custom amplification.
For small but serious studios or edit suites that want the Focal sound, but don’t have space or high-power output needs for a Twin6 Be, Focal offers the 2-way Solo6 Be, a compact, no-compromise studio monitor. With a sound as captivating as its cabinet looks, the 6.5" Solo6 Be has an impressive bass extension down to 40Hz and linear response up to 40kHz. The Solo6 Be’s linear wide-bandwidth response is one of the key factors in its ability to reproduce audio with stunning realism, along with low mids that are full but balanced and neutral or un-hyped in the midrange. The amazing spatial detail of the Solo6 Be enables precision panning throughout the stereo field, with what could only be described as a black backdrop that provides the necessary contrast for the timbral colors of each instrument to shine distinctly in the mix, yet blend musically is well—the hard-to-attain goal of expensive-sounding mixes. And, once you find that you can’t work without your Focal Solo6 Be’s, their compact size and room-compensation contour controls let you take them with you to mix in comfort in any studio.

Focal Solo6 Be—Behind the Grille
With the goal in mind of producing a high-output tweeter that wouldn’t narrow directivity and didn’t require a high-energy input, Focal spent more than twenty years in research and development. The result was Focal’s hallmark achievement in tweeter technology; a pure Beryllium dome tweeter capable of covering 5 full octaves from 1kHz to 40kHz.
Being exceptionally strong and lightweight, Beryllium has the capacity to reproduce high frequencies and transients with unparalleled speed and transparency. Also, due to its rapid energy dissipation, beryllium doesn’t continue ringing after being excited by attack information. Beryllium immediately stops resonating after a sound it output, which in turn eliminates any transient smearing. The result is incredibly accurate and detailed spatialization.
Inverted dome tweeter
There are elements of mix processing found in the fine detail work that is difficult to judge, such as reverb tails, dispersion, and diffusion, as well as elements of compression, particularly overall mix compression. Our ability to hear and judge these effects, particularly in context, rests mainly with spatial cues, attack, and transient information—all the domain of the tweeter.
Once Focal engineers settled on Beryllium for the tweeter composition, the next step was to find a way to optimize its response to better enable perception of the aforementioned mix elements. Focal’s innovative inverted dome tweeter was the outcome of that search. It offers unparalleled dynamics, enabling very precise control of compression, while its outstanding spatial precision facilitates the accurate assessment of reverb tails and stereo imaging.
Focal accomplished these amazing results by the mechanical coupling of voice coil and dome. The voice coil is fixed mid-height on the dome and uniformly moves the entire surface of the cone, whereas a traditional positive-going dome is joined at its edge and therefore susceptible to random flexing across the surface. The inverted dome directly radiates into the air with maximum efficiency, which results in an extremely precise soundstage. The dome’s response curve is far more linear than that of any positive dome, thus providing better dispersion and very low directivity.
The “W” composite sandwich cone
Focal’s composite sandwich cone technology has been in development for more than 15 years. The "W" process (Glass/Foam/Glass), used on Focal’s SM11, SM8 and SM6 series, of which the Solo6 Be is a member, provides a true optimization of the frequency response by fine-tuning mass, rigidity, and damping parameters. The balance between these three fundamental and often contradictory parameters is the foundation of the outstanding neutrality of Focal speakers.
A custom-designed amplification stage
Designing an amp to be integrated inside a speaker cabinet offers the advantages of a shorter path, optimal driver matching, protection circuitry and precision crossovers. However, the amplifier’s power and quality requirements for a sonically transparent monitor can be at odds with speaker size and cooling needs. While Class AB amplifiers offer a combination of high-frequency accuracy found in Class A designs, with the greater efficiency of Class B amps, the power output of Class AB can quickly bottom out when it comes to powering bass and midrange woofers.
Focal engineers used BASH technology to develop the bass/medium amplification circuit for the SM6 professional line of speakers. This was the only way to exploit the best of class AB style circuits (for exceptional quality) with a class D type yield, which is crucial when housing a 150W RMS amplifier in such a small space. A pure class AB circuit is sufficient to power the less-energy-demanding high-frequency tweeter, allowing for an extremely wide bandwidth and exceptional accuracy.
Speaker switch (Left/Right): This switch lets you select which of the two 6.5" drivers will reproduce the midrange. This control is very useful when it comes to getting the best possible imaging in any cabinet layout.
Input switch: A 2-position switch selects input sensitivity between professional +4dBu and consumer-grade -10dBV sources.
HF contour: This control allows for a continuous adjustment of the high-frequency level; it operates above 5kHz within a ±3dB range.
LF contour: This control allows for a continuous adjustment of low-frequency levels. It operates below 150Hz within a ±6dB range. This adjustment is typically used to deal with excessive LF energy resulting from acoustic coupling with close reflecting surfaces, such as a mixing console or nearby walls.
Power-on indicator: A power-on LED is located on the cabinet front panel, near the Focal logo.
