Powerplay P16 16-Channel Digital Personal Mixing System Overview
The Behringer Powerplay P16 is a 16-channel personal monitoring system that comprises the P16-M personal mixer and P16-I input module, with the ability to build a system of up to 48 mixers with the P16-D Ultranet digital network distributor.
In a perfect world, an engineer could give all musicians same mix in order for them to blend properly as an ensemble. But that’s not the reality we face in the studio or on stage, particularly with electric instruments that amplify instruments well out of their natural dynamic range. Also, not everyone hears the same way, or requires the same elements in a mix to perform, particularly with overdubs. All of this is a polite way of saying that in a cue or stage mix all musicians want “more me.” However, there is no “everything louder than everything else” button on the console, but there is a next best thing. It’s called the Behringer Powerplay P16, an easy and affordable way for live or recording musicians/vocalists to set the levels in mix they want without all the “can you hear me now” back and forth over the talkback mic. Featuring quick and easy setup, a basic system can be installed and configured in minutes, while offering the ability to expand into a much larger system.
Behringer Powerplay P16 personal mixing system:
- P16-M 16-channel, 24-bit/48kHz digital stereo mixer with EQ, pan, and level control per channel, plus limiter and failsafe global mute for ear protection
- P16-I input module with 16 analog and 2x 8-channel ADAT inputs transmits 24-bit/48kHz audio over standard CAT5e cable
- P16-D Ultranet 8x RJ45 output distribution modules enable a system with up to 48 mixers
Behringer Powerplay P16 overview
The basic Powerplay P16 comprises the P16-M 16-channel personal mixer and the P16-I input module. The core of the system, the 1U rackmount P16-I has 16 analog inputs, 2x 8-channel ADAT inputs (16-channels at 48kHz), and six RJ45 Ethernet outputs that allow you to connect up to six P16-M personal mixers via Cat5e cable. For ease of operation, the P16-M is powered via the Cat5 cable.
The P16-M offers the non-tech-oriented musician a simple and intuitive user interface enabling them to dial in their perfect monitor mix with a minimum of explanation. The P16-M provides all the basics a musician needs for tracking or live performance, including volume adjustment, solo and mute, and left/right pan control for each of the 16 input signals. Each channel also has an equalizer with bass and treble shelving EQ (tone controls), and a semi-parametric midrange EQ with sweepable frequency control (mids is where most of our music lives). Global functions include level and EQ, plus a panic mute switch to protect your ears in case of unexpectedly high levels or microphone feedback from stage monitors.
The best part is that all of these adjustments can be made without affecting anyone else’s personal mix. After you’ve dialed-in your mix, it can be stored in one of 16 presets for instant recall at your next performance or session. Not only is the P16-M easy to use, but it’s also big on sound quality, with audiophile-grade, 24-bit/48kHz converters.
Powerplay P16-I input module
The core of the system is the P16-I Input Module, a 1U rackmount unit that connects to the main mixing console and up to six P16-M personal mixers. One P16-I enables you to build a system sufficient for a typical recording studio, small to medium-sized band, or worship team. With 16 analog and ADAT digital inputs, that can transmit 24-bit digital audio via six RJ45 Ethernet connectors to six P16-M mixers via standard CAT5e cable. The P16-I is an ultra-low-latency system (less than 1ms), which enables musicians the ability to perform at their best, without having to fight or cope with playback limitations (you can’t perform in time if you can’t hear in time).
Powerplay P16-D Ultranet distribution module
Much like a computer network port expander with RJ45 I/O, the P16-D is a 1-in/8-out Ultranet distributor. Used in conjunction with the P16-I input module, as many as six P16-D Digital Ultranet distributors can be added to your system to accommodate up to forty-eight P16-M Personal Mixers.
What is Ultranet?
Ultranet (which is much better and safer than Skynet) is a product of a joint collaboration between the world-renowned engineers at Klark Teknik, Midas, Turbosound, and Behringer. A truly innovative digital audio distribution system Ultranet seamlessly transmits up to 16 independent channels of 24-bit digital audio and control data via a single CAT5 cable between compatible digital devices, including mixers, I/O stage boxes, powered loudspeakers, and personal monitoring systems (but it can’t send robots into the past to protect you). As compared to traditional analog methods of audio transmission, with Ultranet audio signals are impervious to Radio Frequency Interference (RFI); signal crosstalk is eliminated; ease of setup translates directly into significant time saved during installation. Metaphorically speaking. Ultranet is a powerful digital eco-system that gives you control over every element of your audio production environment from one convenient location.
Mounties to the rescue
The optional P16-MB mounting bracket allows the P16-M Digital Personal Mixer to be attached to any standard microphone stand, as well as music or drum stands.
A time and money-saving solution for studios and live venues
The affordable Powerplay P16 Personal Monitoring System puts total control of the monitor system in the hands of the performers—great for bands without monitor mix engineers, or freeing studio engineers to focus on tracking, saving time and money in the studio, without having to create multiple muse-killing cue mixes while the clock is ticking. For front-of-house engineers working on their own, the Powerplay P16 is a great stress reliever, particularly if the band shows up late for sound check. The “more-me” P16-M mixer is the “everything louder than everything else” button on the console you could only dream of.
