The Audient iD44 is a 20-in/24-out desktop audio interface featuring classic Audient sound via Heritage console mic preamps, class-leading conversion, instrument DI’s with tube amplifier emulation, dedicated talkback, monitor control, and much more.

Real-world electronics is a study in tradeoffs, with corners cut to keep costs down. Usually, the first place that comes under the knife is preamps. However, Audient built its reputation on building high-quality audio gear for a fraction of what you would pay for similar quality, which is why they can offer an affordable desktop interface with no-compromise preamps and conversion. Audient iD44 Audio Interface—Under the Hood

The result of 20 years’ expertise in analog hardware design, the iD44 sits at the top of Audient’s range of audio interfaces. With a combined analog and digital I/O of 20 inputs by 24 outputs, the id44 features four Audient console mic pres, class-leading converters, ADAT expandability, and that’s just for starters. What’s more, the iD44 delivers the audio performance of an Audient console on your desktop, giving you the professional sound only Audient can deliver at a fraction of the cost you would normally expect for such quality and functionality.

Audient console mic preamplifiers

iD44 features four Class-A console mic pres, the same discrete circuit design found in Audient’s renowned ASP8024-HE recording console. Designed to deliver ultra-low noise and low distortion with up to 60dB gain, the Audient mic pre will provide an accurate reproduction of your source, along with enough analog warmth to add a bit of character, making it the go-to mic pre for any project.

Not only is the Audient mic pre renowned for being clean, punchy and musical, it is often regarded as one of the most versatile mic pres available. Its impressive dynamic range enables faithful reproduction of the source, with greater realism in the audible range and better blending of instruments, plus just enough color to give the signal some character.

The Audient console mic pre is an all-discrete, high-grade op-amp design that delivers low noise, low distortion, and high common mode rejection (CMMR) at all gain levels, which is part of the secret of Audient design. According to designer Dave Dearden, “A successful mic pre doesn’t just have to amplify a low-level signal up to something more usable. It must also be protected against external attack such as static, phantom power, and radio frequency interference (RFI). This is where component choice is vital, especially the low-noise transistors and even passive elements such as resistors and RFI filters.”

Audiophile converter technology

There’s conversion, and then there’s conversion done right. These days, decent converter chips offering wide dynamic range are fairly cheap and easy to implement, but Audient won’t settle for just “decent.” High-quality AD/DA converters are a vital factor in accurately hearing what you're recording or mixing. Audient has chosen some of the best converters available to make sure all of its products offer you stunning translation. The ID44 incorporates the highest grade converters from Burr Brown, the leaders in converter technology. The integral ADC guarantees you will have the best conversion possible. This isn't just the best converter in a mic pre, it also stands up against dedicated converters as well, so you can focus on the music and let ID44 do the heavy lifting.

How much do converters matter?

  • Do you find your recordings grainy and not as clear as you would like them to be?
  • Do you find that you have poor translation when listening to your mixes on alternative playback systems?
  • Do you struggle to hear detail when listening to your favorite albums?
  • Have you ever struggled to perfectly time your delay or reverb tails?

All these issues are symptoms of poor quality AD-DA converters, which clearly demonstrates why-high quality converters are vital to improving your mixes or listening experience. High levels of distortion, crosstalk, and poor clocking are commonly caused by low-quality converters. These factors largely contribute to lower quality recordings and poor translation when making mix decisions. To ensure this doesn’t happen Audient products use class-leading converters that will take those thin and grainy sounding recording and give them clarity and dimension.

The iD44’s digital to analog converters have a remarkably low THD+N (total harmonic distortion plus noise) that specs out at 0.0006%. That means that you don’t have mix-quality killing noise build-up as track count increases—so layer away and maintain clear and present tracks (you thought we were going to say “danger” there . . . admit it).

Audient’s approach to conversion

Audient engineers spend months testing and listening to new technologies in order to make the best sounding products they can—a process applied not only to analog components but also converters. After listening to dozens of different converters, Audient engineers came to the conclusion that Burr Brown was the perfect choice for iD22, iD14, ASP800, and ASP880, while a set of audiophile-grade AKM (Asahi Kasei Microdevices) paired nicely with the iD4. Through detailed listening tests on multiple monitors and in various environments Audient found that these converters consistently offered the most natural and organic representation of the source, enabling you to hear your audio more accurately than ever.

Expand your analog horizons digitally

Audient understands that much like shoes, friends, or Internet cat videos, you can never have too many (well, maybe cat videos not so much). To give you the expandability to encompass bigger sessions or live tracking, the iD44 supports ADAT and S/PDIF I/O. Via ADAT, you can add up to 16 channels of with a pair of eight-channel ASP880 or ASP800 preamps (or one of each) to create a power compact home studio or mobile rig—that’s 20 channels of Audient’s console-grade preamps.   

Discrete JFET DIs

Along with four channels of Audient’s console mic preamps, the iD44 has two harmonically rich JFET DI (direct inject) inputs designed to replicate the input stage of a classic tube amplifier. Simply plug in your guitar, bass, or synth and start recording.

Balanced inserts

Two fully balanced insert points enable you to integrate outboard gear prior to conversion, letting you quickly insert compressors, vintage mic pres, or EQs. The insert return also gives you direct access to the analog-to-digital converters, providing the cleanest signal path possible—great for printing to disk or integrating outboard analog line-level sources. Whether you’re creating vocal chains or processing stems iD44 gives you the flexibility record external mic preamps or track and mix with hardware effects processors.

Two Independent headphone outputs

If you have a production partner or musician you like to work with, the iD44 lets you work together without the need for an external headphone amp and distribution. Featuring iD44’s advanced headphone amp technology, Whether you’re tracking an artist or mixing in headphones, iD44’s two stereo headphone amps have been designed to provide enough power for your headphones to perform to their highest potential. Set up two separate cue mixes through iD44s independent stereo outputs, each driven by their own DAC—giving you incredible depth and accuracy for optimal and inspiring performance.

Console-style monitor management

Drawing on Audient’s extensive experience in analog console manufacture, with a design history encompassing MCA, Soundcraft, Midas, DDA, and of course, Audient, the iD44 features a range of flexible monitor control functions including dedicated talkback, cut and dim buttons along with polarity, mono, speaker select and cue mix monitoring. All monitoring functions can be assigned to three programmable function buttons. No more time spent searching for software controlled features or scrolling through menus, just assign the monitoring functions you need. The id44 also includes workflow features you would expect to find on a comprehensive console design, including phase reverse, mono summing, and dedicated talkback control.

Intuitive software control panel

As a manufacturer of renowned studio consoles, back by David Dearden’s 40-plus years of console design experience, the iD44’s control software truly is mix-focused, based on the workflow you’d expect from an analog console. However, to keep you focused on creativity, the iD Mixer has been designed with simplicity and elegance in mind. With it, you can create up to four stereo artist cue mixes, name and customize channels, save layout presets, assign hardware function buttons, quickly setup advanced routing, use presets in standalone mode, and more. Tightly integrating hardware and software, the iD Mixer makes the recording process easy giving you total control and reliability for critical recording and mixing tasks. iD Mix is compatible with Windows 10 and macOS High Sierra.

Use your computer’s built-in mic for talkback

Without having to purchase a separate master control section or use up a mic channel for talkback, iD44’s dedicated talkback technology enables you to use any audio source connected to your computer as your talkback mic, such as a USB microphone, or even the built-in mic that resides in your computer. To continue making your recording life easier, the iD44 also has dedicated talkback, dim, and cut controls, just like you’d find on a console—without taking up any additional recording resources.

Audient’s ScrollControl multi-function virtual scroll wheel

Audient’s ScrollControl adds multi-functionality to the top-panel volume control. It’s another way the iD44 takes what you have and makes the most of it. With a touch of a button, iD44’s volume encoder becomes a virtual scroll wheel, enabling you to manipulate DAW functions, plug-in parameters, and more, the way you would make adjustments on a hardware unit. All you have to do is hover your mouse over the software control you want to adjust and ScrollControl does the rest—whether you’re automating filter cutoff on a soft synth, performing delay throws, riding vocal levels, making EQ adjustments, writing smooth and creative automation moves, and more. ScrollControl can also be used to “humanize” parts or add a live-performance element to your tracks.
