Great River Electronics Harrison 32EQ for the 500-series

The Great River Harrison 32EQ is a 4-band, 500-series equalizer built in partnership with Harrison Consoles that authentically reprises the sound and proprietary design of the famed Harrison 32C console used by Bruce Swedien to mix Michael Jackson's Thriller

There are certain signal processors that are integrally interwoven into the fabric of rock and pop music history - processors used to craft the signature sounds that we identify with classic and best-selling music. Once such tool was the channel equalizers found in the Harrison 32C console, which enabled recording legend Bruce Swedien to craft the vocal and instrument sounds of one of the world's best-selling albums of all time, Michael Jackson's Thriller, as well as Jackson's Bad. But that's not the only place you've heard the Harrison 32-series EQ in action. All of ABBA's hits were mixed on a Harrison desk, as well as Sade's Promise, and Paul Simon's Graceland. A collaborative effort with Harrison Consoles, Great River's 32EQ 500-series equalizer features the 4-band EQ and filters from the renowned Harrison 32-Series consoles. The Great River 32EQ incorporates the original specifications. With support directly from the original designers at Harrison Consoles, the highly prized characteristics of the original console EQ are guaranteed in the 32EQ.

Great River Harrison 32EQ 500-series - Behind the Curtain

The Harrison 32EQ is a 4-band, parametric equalizer featuring a proprietary design found in the renowned Harrison 32C consoles, used to craft some of the best selling albums of all time. The Great River 32EQ 500-series module also includes the parametric, second-order high-pass and low-pass filters, also made famous in the 32-series consoles. The Great River Harrison 32EQ is a unity-gain design that delivers excellent noise performance and headroom.

The unique design of the equalization stages allows full reciprocal operation of the boost and cut controls, with respect to both frequency and phase response. Special circuitry automatically adjusts the effective bandwidth under all conditions. Continuously variable frequency selection and boost/cut amount provides proper equalization for nearly any desired effect.

The high-frequency band (HI) extends from 800Hz to 16kHz. The two mid-range bands (MID) overlap; one extends from 400Hz to 8kHz, while the other ranges from 200Hz to 4kHz. The low-frequency range (LO) convers 40Hz to 800Hz. Additionally, the low- and high-frequency bands are switchable between shelving or peaking. The mid-range bands are peaking only. There is also an in/out switch (IN) for the four bands of boost/cut equalization.

The parametric high-pass and low-pass filters have a 12dB per-octave slope. They are an all-electronic design, containing no inductors. The high-pass filter has a range of 25Hz to 2.75kHz, while the low-pass filter extends from 160Hz to 20kHz. Continuously variable HP and LP controls allow both subtle corrections as well as special effects. The 32EQ has a separate “in” switch for the filters that that they can be inserted into the signal path independently of the 4-band equalizer.
