Greynoise Studios, NYC

Located in the historic Quad building in Times Square, NYC, Grey Noise wanted to build a small B room with a big sound and lively interior to complement their larger Augspurger-equipped Studio A. Intended primarily as a writing and production room, the control room is adjoined with a 50sq. ft. iso booth for vocals and instrument overdubs.

Design Challenges and Solutions

A simple and straightforward project (relatively speaking), the only challenges presented were the small size of the room. As such, the placement of doors for access as well as acoustic materials had to be carefully considered to make the most of limited real estate. To compensate for a fairly short back wall, trappings and acoustics were judiciously applied to provide an accurate listening position when sitting at the console.

To achieve the aforementioned big sound in a 125 sq. ft. control room, the compact, yet very powerful 3-way Augspurger Treo 812 CFM full-range monitor system with dual SXE3/3500 power amplifiers was selected. The equipment chosen reflects the current lineup found in today’s production studios, including Pro Tools HDX Core, Avid Pro Tools HD, AMS Neve 1073DPX and 1073 SPX preamps, Pultec EQP-1A3 equalizer, Tube-Tech CL-1B compressor, and Grace Designs monitor controller, and a full complement of plug-ins and virtual instruments provided by Pro Audio Design.

Interior design:
Malekpour Design Partners created aesthetically pleasing acoustic treatments with a modern look and feel, including a wavy latticework ceiling, to metaphorically blend with the waveform-inspired wall trim above the Zaor workstation furniture. Flexible mood lighting comes courtesy of user-programmable color-changing LED lighting.
