Meet the Maker: Liverpool compressor designer Brian Cornfield has been grinding the gears for 40 years.Jun, 27
Meet the Maker: Grove Hill Audio’s Brian Cornfield.
You would think that a man with the long and successful career that this month's profile person has, might want to kick back and float around on a boat, or laze on the beaches of Old Mexico. He could literally rest on his laurels. Not so THIS gear man. To describe Liverpool Compressor designer Brian Cornfield as a Pro Audio veteran would be no small understatement. “Founding Father” would be more appropriate, having driven the studio gear and design business for over four decades. (As for taking it easy? Not a chance).
Cornfield's involvement in the studio equipment industry began in the early 1970s in Los Angeles, when he started working as the first salesperson at Westlake Audio with the now-legendary designer Tom Hidley. Cornfield soon found himself swimming in the deep end of the industry’s pro audio pool.
Working in the buzzing LA music environment, Cornfield’s success grew, prompting him to start his own company, Everything Audio, in 1972. For over a decade, he and his company provided recording equipment and design to studios in Europe, Central America and the United States.
In 1990, Cornfield and his family moved to Washington State, where he later co-founded Pacific Pro Audio in Seattle. The company was soon woven in to the fabric of the city’s red-hot music environment, headed by groups like Heart and Nirvana.
By 2002, Cornfield had founded the highly successful Chameleon Labs, whose mission was to bring more affordable “vintage” and “boutique” audio gear into the marketplace. Using high quality manufacturing companies in Asia, Chameleon Labs was able to take advantage of the lower labor costs without sacrificing audio quality.
But he wasn't done yet! In 2015, Cornfield and his partners formed a new studio equipment manufacturer, Grove Hill Audio. They wanted to offer something new, special and unique; thus the Liverpool tube compressor was born. Across the board, the initial response and reviews have lauded the unit with nothing but high praise. Users are pleased with the Liverpool’s ability to be both an everyday compressor and a harmonic coloration device. Users are also pleased with Liverpool’s very affordable price tag. Cornfield proves once again you can have rich tone without the rich price.
Based upon input from customers, several more Grove Hill Audio products are planned for the future. Stay tuned…
