Avalon Recording finds bliss with custom portable recording rig from PAD
The Challenge: To make a rig that allows this highly experienced engineer/producer feel equally comfortable recording remotely or in his home facility.
The Solution: “Avalon Recording is owned by a very talented engineer named Jim Vanzino based in Harrisburg, PA, which is a beautiful, rural location,” says Dave Malekpour, President of PAD. “Jim approached Professional Audio Design with an idea for a cost-effective, portable recording solution that would work equally well in the field or in his home-base facility.
“Professional Audio Design understands that the key to making a go-anywhere studio is a rig with flexibility, quick connect-and –disconnect capability, and total reliability. We also take into account usability in on-location recording situation by asking things like, ‘Where are the things that the engineer will be touching all the time?’ so we put that gear near eye-level, not at their feet, and make sure everything is organized and labeled properly. The key is to foresee possible technical problems and minimize them so that they don’t need service in what could be a very remote location.
“The system for Avalon Recording is built around an Audient ASP24 board recording to Pro Tools. There’s a nice selection of outboard gear, but the whole rig breaks down so two people can load up a 36-channel console on legs without taking it out of the road case. It’s ensconced in an enclosure called Tilt-A-Console, which is specially designed to make it easy for two people to stand up a console that’s 800 pounds with case.
“Jim has told us that he’s very proud of the meticulous wiring work that went into this rig and the care that Professional Audio Design employed in putting it together, and PAD has also contributed to the technical design of Jim Vanzino's new post-production facility, The Mix Place. Harrisburg may be a little off the beaten path, musically, but with the Audient onboard, Avalon Recording is competitive with big city facilities – mobile or stationary.”
